Called the "market leader in cafe salons," Veronica's offers traditional -- and historical -- fare at prices you won't mind paying. It's a celebration of British cuisine over a 2,000-year period, with dishes based on medieval, Tudor, and even Roman-era recipes. The chef gives these traditional dishes imaginative, modern twists. One month she'll focus on Scotland, while the next she'll concentrate on Victorian foods, dishes from Wales, or an all-Irish menu, and so on. You might start with a carrot tart perfumed with orange-flavored water and served with a minted pea purée based on an Irish recipe from 1746. Or else try the deviled whitebait with a tartare dip (deviling became popular in the 19th century and, of course, whitebait has been eaten since Medieval times, when it was caught in the Thames). Main dishes might include lamb marinated in milk and honey and roasted in red wine (based on an ancient Roman recipe).
